Learning to Love Your Self
“All of life is a practice of learning to love the Self.” – Jeffrey L. Scholl
Do you love yourself? Really? How much?
The way to tell how much you love yourself is by looking out at your life today. Examine each area…your level of abundance, your career, your relationships, your health…anything and everything in your life is a reflection to you of how much you love yourself.
If you love yourself, you will let go of what other people want for you and only focus on what YOU want for you. Other people’s intentions are usually well intended, but most often our parents and teachers wanted things for us so that THEY could feel good. Perhaps our parents wanted us to have a certain career so that they could tell others that their son or daughter was a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer…when what we wanted was to be an actor, a writer or an artist. Perhaps we wanted to be a forest ranger because we loved being out in nature. If we love ourselves, then we follow our own inner guidance and we let go of what others want for us. If others loved us as they as they say that they do, then all they would want for us is to be happy.
If you love yourself, you will practice boundaries. You will only spend time around people that you feel good being with and you will protect your boundaries by forgiving people that have hurt you in the past. Forgiveness is a “self-protection mechanism” and it releases the emotional energy that continues to attract the same situations into your life again and again.
If you love yourself, you will learn to feel your feelings so that you CAN feel who you feel good being with. You will learn when you really learn to feel your feelings that you CAN feel what foods are good for you and which substances do not serve you. You won’t have to wait until your body develops problems. Our body is constantly sending us signals. Our pharmaceutical companies teach us over and over that these signals are a mistake and if we will buy their product, they will numb out those signals…although there may be some side effects. If you love yourself, you will listen to your body’s signals and understand that they are important messages sent to you to tell you what not to eat and what toxic energies you need to let go of.
If you love yourself, you will learn to meditate…to allow God’s energy to flow through you and out into your life. Meditation quiets the mind’s incessant chatter and allows us to experience peace. It allows us to focus and live mindfully and purposefully. Meditation allows us the opportunity to RECEIVE all that we have been asking for.
If you love yourself, you will tell yourself that…A LOT. You will learn to practice loving your self. You will practice talking to yourself in loving ways. You will forgive yourself for your less than perfect behavior and let go of other people’s perceptions of you that you may have believed at some point. You are a perfect Divine Being, who simply has not practiced loving yourself enough to be living it.
If you want to live it, practice it every day. Before long, loving yourself will be your life.
